About the Department/College

The Department of Clinical Psychology at Northern Arizona University (NAU) is pleased to announce two openings for non-tenure track, academic year Assistant/Associate Teaching Professors. This position is to teach core courses in the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology (PsyD) and is based in Phoenix, Arizona, NAU's North Valley Campus. The position is renewable, based on availability of funds, effective performance, and program needs. NAU will not provide any U.S. immigration support or sponsorship for this position.

About the Position

The Department of Clinical Psychology seeks candidates for an Assistant and Associate Teaching Professor position, to begin January 2024. The successful candidate will have skills in teaching and mentoring graduate students in clinical psychology. The position is a 10-month academic year position with opportunities for summer teaching.

Responsibilities Include:
  1. Teach graduate clinical psychology classes for the doctoral program in Clinical Psychology.
  2. Teach majority of courses in-person.
  3. Assist in recruiting, retaining, and advising doctoral students in Clinical Psychology.
  4. Direct graduate student clinical research projects.
  5. Fulfill service responsibilities to the department, college, university, and the profession.
  6. Work collaboratively with behavioral health service agencies to coordinate practicum and internship experiences for clinical psychology students.


Minimum Qualifications

For the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor:
  1. Earned Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, or in a closely related area of Psychology. Candidates who are ABD are also encouraged to apply and will be considered with the condition that their doctoral degree is completed within the first year of appointment
  2. Instructional experience (can include college teaching, teaching assistantships, workshops or seminars)
  3. Prior college teaching experience
  4. Eligibility for licensure as a psychologist in Arizona (if ABD, upon completion of all degree requirements)

For the rank of Associate Teaching Professor:
  1. Earned Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, or in a closely related area of Psychology
  2. Minimum six years of college teaching experience - OR - teaching experience that warrants Associate Teaching Professor rank.
  3. Eligibility for licensure as a psychologist in Arizona


Preferred Qualifications

For the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor:
  1. Earned a doctorate from APA accredited program in clinical psychology by August 2023
  2. Two or more years of relevant teaching experience in the scientific foundation area of clinical psychology (can be teaching assistantships, etc.)
  3. Interest in working in an educational setting that emphasizes student populations from a variety of backgrounds
  4. Evidence of a strong psychologist identity, and a desire to be actively involved in related professional associations
  5. Licensed as a psychologist in Arizona

For the rank of Associate Teaching Professor:
  1. Earned a doctorate from APA accredited program in clinical psychology
  2. More than six years of relevant teaching experience in the scientific foundation area of clinical psychology (can be teaching assistantship etc.) in an APA accredited program
  3. Evidence of success in a leadership role in graduate level program
  4. Experience working in an educational setting that emphasizes student populations from a variety of backgrounds
  5. Evidence of a strong psychologist identity, and an active involvement in related professional associations.
  6. Licensed as a psychologist in Arizona


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Assistant Teaching Professor:
  1. Skill in recruiting, advising, and mentoring graduate students.
  2. Ability to work with graduate students on research projects.
  3. Promotes a diverse, inclusive environment.
  4. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with department chairs, other program directors/coordinators, faculty, staff, students, and associated members of the professional community.

Associate Teaching Professor:
  1. Skill or strong interest in recruiting, advising, and mentoring graduate students.
  2. Ability or strong interest in working with graduate students on research projects.
  3. Promotes a diverse, inclusive environment.
  4. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with department chairs, other program directors/coordinators, faculty, staff, students, and associated members of the professional community.
  5. Ability to network/collaborate and consult with health service agencies and /or professionals.


Compensation & Benefits

Salary and rank commensurate with experience.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. Pre-Employment Check

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
